Giving your hair extra TLC

I get asked all the time about what can be done in order to give our hair that extra dose of TLC that contributes and supports our goal for shiny, happy and healthy hair. It’s quite simple. It starts with a routine and good quality product. As stylists we do our best in salon to look after your hair, but we only see every you every 4, 6 or 8 weeks.

Now you’re probably thinking great, I’ve got to spend more money after I’ve just paid out for my hair. We understand everyone has different budgets for hair care. Some of you see this as an absolute essential, while some of you put this to the bottom of your shopping list. And that’s okay. Regardless of what camp you’re in, your hair needs care and maintenance.

Start Small, invest in a good colour safe shampoo and then build from there. In some of the products, you can get miniatures or travel size. A great way to try something without the big expense. This way you get to try the product and see how suitable it is for your hair and the difference it makes. Even if you start with trying one or two, and slowly grow your range at home, when it’s convenient for you.

We love the Paul Mitchell and Olaplex range. If you’re wanting to start small, then think about purchasing one of the Olaplex masks, number 3 or number 8. You can apply these up to 3 times a week, to help with your condition .Number 3 is an at-home intensive hair repairing treatment that contains a superpower of a molecule to help prevent damage and rebuild the hair’s broken bonds as a result of colouring. Number 8 is a highly concentrated repair mask, adding moisture.

HAIR HACK: If hair masks aren’t for you, because you simply can’t find the time. Try multi-tasking and stick a treatment on while you’re watch your latest Netflix series.

Olaplex number 6 is a gamechanger. It’s a Bond Smoother that you simply apply after you’ve finished your cleansing hair routine that will help to strengthen, hydrate, moisturise and speed up your blow dry time while eliminating frizz and flyways. Get up to 72 hours of smooth, shiny manageable hair – Winner!
Take care with wet hair. I would always advise anyone with longer, thicker hair to invest in wet brush. I’m not sure what we did before?! They are literal life and time savers. These are brushes that have different bristles on the brush, so that you can use these on wet and dry hair, without having all the pulling and tugging when you’re super knotted after your shower. They glide through whet hair and limit damage.

HAIR HACK: If your hair is always knotty and you spend ages brushing it after you’ve washed it, take your wet brush into the shower with you and brush your hair when you have the conditioner on. This will make it so much easier to brush when you’re out the shower.

When it’s time to bring the drying and heat styling, I’m sure you’ve all heard it a million times over, but get and use a good heat protector! Aside from the protective element they also add the overall look and feel of your styled hair. Some even contain additional hold, great for those who have hair that drops before they get out of the door!

A salon favourite, you’ll see us all reach for this, is the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Hydromist Blow-out Spray. Added benefit, it smells amazing; As do all of the Paul Mitchell products.

There are a few things you can do for free, which we all like the sound of. Try using less heat on your hair. Does your hair really need that extra smooth over with the straighteners, or could adding some Olaplex bonding oil or Paul Mitchell anti-frizz leave-in treatment do the trick for today? What about air drying?

A simple trick, that most of us don’t think would affect your hair as much, is washing. If you are washing your hair every day, it might be time to buy some dry shampoo and try making it longer periods of time between washes. We all don’t like greasy hair, but washing your hair too regularly can cause drying your hair out and stripping all the nutrients our hair and scalp need.

Ideally, we only need to be washing our hair once or twice a week. But I’m sure for most of your hair washing lovers that do this every day, I know this sounds scary right now. But even trying every other day washing is a step in the right direction.

We look forward to hearing how you’ve found trying these tips when we see you next at the salon!

And if you’ve found they’ve helped, don’t forget to tell your friends.

Over and out,

Meg Bancroft
